Many articles have been recently written regarding the overhead licking branch. Until the "Lick Stick" there has not been a perfect way to simulate a mock scrape with a mock overhead licking branch. Used to mark territory and signal their presence, deer routinely use a licking branch in a number of locations throughout their range. The Lick Stick is the "Original Mock Licking Branch". We field tested the "Lick Stick" by putting trail cams in locations on public hunting land in Wisconsin's Marquette and Buffalo counties. The "Lick Stick" is a Wisconsin hunter engineered all natural tool that simulates a vertical overhead licking branch. The natural fiber rope (low order sisal) acts as the wick to hold the Deer Lick Stick synthetic preorbital gland lure. The way the rope wraps around the stick ("Wrap Wick Technology") helps evenly spread the oily synthetic preorbital gland lure. When dripped onto the middle portion of the rope the synthetic gland lure runs down the stick covering a long area, similar to the way a buck rubs his cheek up and down a overhead licking branch. Hang over a scrape, mock scrape, or on a heavily used trail and once they visit, they will leave their own gland scent on the specially designed, all natural "Lick Stick", and return to see who else has visited.
Field testing and time in the woods has helped us identify the right materials and winding process that gives them what they are looking for in a mock licking branch. The "Lick Stick" is specially designed to hold the Deer Lick Stick synthetic preorbital gland lure that would otherwise drip to the ground, which is un-natural. And, unlike estrous scent wicks, leaving the "Lick Stick" out for extended periods of time is totally natural. Using estrous during pre and early season will tip off every mature buck in the area that something isn't right since the timing is off. Most of our trail camera pics show them stretching their neck out for the perfect lethal kill shot.
